The Clinic is donated to Bahir Dar University

The managing team behind the clinic have decided to let the clinic continue in a new form so it also in the future will contribute to the development of Dental & Maxillofacial surgery in the region. This is due to the fact that our ages make it difficult to continue with fulltime commitment.

The supporting team will continue to work for maintenance and clinical service but more on consulting basis.

The organization is not yet defined but will be organized under the medical faculty. When the new University Hospital is starting its service, the clinic will be transferred to the Hospital.

Welcome to Bahir Dar University, Gotland Clinic

Bahir Dar University Hospital

BDUhospital 2

The hospital is now in some months ready to have equipment installed. An oral and maxillofacial departement is planed on the first floor

January 2018

Due to administration problems the clinic is not giving any services. The new hospital is closer to be open and therefore it seems to be better just now to transfer to the hospital. No definite decision is taken but soon it has to be done. More information will be published here when we know more.

Work goes on

The preliminary plan for the clinic is to widen to other arias of the University’s community services.

  • The first aim is to make the clinic a model for modern dentistry in Ethiopia. The clinical work should be done according to high standards that are defined in Ethiopian standard documents but still not implemented in many setups.
  • Secondly, other Bahir Dar University Gotland Clinic can also host other specialties as general surgery, ENT or gynecology and more that does not require admission to wards.
  • Finally, the clinic shall apart from giving service to patients serve as platform for graduate Ethiopian doctors in clinical training in methods that is seldom provided in Ethiopia.

Gotland Clinic as an academic institution:
Newly qualified doctors in Ethiopia sometimes lack the practical skills due to absence of instruments and facilities during their undergraduate education as well as during their work as qualified doctors. Gotland Clinic can serve as an educational facility where qualified doctors can receive additional training in practical dentistry. This educational part can develop into an academic Master’s Programme where the curriculum should especially include deep knowledge of modern dental techniques, materials and the use of them. Teachers can be collected from abroad coming to Bahir Dar or participate by telemedicine. This model may be expanded to other specialties

Dr Marie has now totally reshaped the clinic

It has been wonderful to have Marie as a leader, organizer, teacher and motivator. Especially our nurses has had a personalized education in anatomy of the head and mouth, dentistry and also clinical training in oral health including calculus scaling. Our dental doctors from Bahir Dar University and Fellege Hospital has also had their share of her great knowledge. We all want her to return and it will probably be true, but how and when is not decided as Marie now will go back to studies in Sweden. It will be a Master in public health.
